If you have any idea to buy a standard point & shoot camera or professional DSLR camera, withdraw it.  Already cellphone cameras reached an excellent quality point. Now with the arrival of dual camera phones like Redmi Pro, Huawei P9, the mobile photography future is looking promising.

How can it be beneficial?

Today Xiaomi launched much anticipated Redmi Pro model in China. Within a few days, we can get it here in India. The phone consists of two camera lenses. Both the lenses are not same. One is 13 MP lens, and the other is 5 MP lens. Xiaomi embedded dual lenses to achieve DSLR type depth of the field (DOP) on the smartphone.

The Redmi Pro equipped with a dedicated depth of the field image processor. The primary camera shoots still images, while the second camera captures the depth information in the scene. So both will be processed and merged into a single stunning photo. Not only  Xiaomi almost all the phone manufacturers are planning to equip dual cameras in their flagship phone models.

What is the depth of the field?

Before reading the details just observe the above image. You might already saw the same effect in movies where the hero, heroines are focussed, and the remaining background is blurred. It is called as “DOF (Depth Of the Field). To achieve this, you need to purchase dedicated DSLR camera. For example, I’m using Canon EOS 70D DSLR camera that costs Rs. 85,000. To a certain extent, the same effect can be possible through dual camera phones.

My memories with Phone cameras

I’m using cellphone cameras since the beginning days. Above you can see my first camera phone Sony Ericsson P610 bought in 2003. The same year I purchased my first touchscreen phone Sony Ericsson P900. I witnessed many drastic changes in the camera segment of the mobile phones. Smartphones are becoming powerhouses in all aspects. The latest dual lens phones will become trendsetters.
