millions of mail accounts hacked

Here is the another hacking story. It reflects the weak security measures people took on their personal mail accounts.

Millions of email accounts from Google, Yahoo and Mail.ru are hacked by Russia’s criminal underworld. As per the report revealed by a security expert total 272.3 million accounts were compromised.

A significant portion of the hacked mail accounts belongs to Mail.ru which is popular mail service in Russia. A Smaller portion of the compromised accounts belongs to Google and Yahoo.

Most of the users don’t strengthen their mail accounts with security measures. Google came with Security Checkup tool which time to time prompts the users to check their account security settings. Even though people are in a hurry to skip the checkup simply by pressing the “Looks Good” button. This sort of negligence is causing account theft.

Alex Holden, the founder of Hold Security, revealed this latest email scam. Holden came into the notice that one young Russian was trying to sell the stolen credentials of nearly 1.17 billion email accounts.

Total there are 57 million Mail. Ru email accounts, and the remaining accounts belonging to Gmail, Yahoo, few other mail services from China and Germany.

Do you know the cost of the 1.17 billon stolen accounts? It’s just 50 rubles (Russian currency). That means less than Rs. 65. See how cheap our stolen account costs.

Mail.ru has already informed about this hacking scam. It started checking the stolen accounts with its database and is planning to warn it’s mail users to change their passwords.

So be careful with your mail accounts, take proper security measures to safeguard your accounts. I already made a few video demos on Gmail 2-step verification, etc., follow and implement them.
