Kaspersky, the very popular antivirus software around the world, has launched a free version of its most popular software. The free version of this software offers the basic protection for everyone who wants it.

Many of us might be well aware of the security issues that we may have to personally face if we neglect on some basic things like protecting our PCs from the different online threats.

This free tool has been in development for almost 18 months and is now made available for the users in selected countries. The offers some basic necessities like web, email protections and antivirus. It also supports automatic updates.  The company says that offering basic protection for everyone helps it in improving its machine language skills, and thus helping everyone stay safe in the long term.

Kaspersky rolled out its free version of the anti virus in stages all over the world and as a part of it it has been rolled out in the USA, Canada and some Asia Pacific countries. The only requirement for downloading and using this free software from the company is that you must be having a Windows based system and it can be any version from Windows XP to Windows 10.

It looks like a solid security choice for those who are seeking for a basic level protection for their PC.

90 Crores Android phones are at risk with QuadRooter

Quadrooter – the latest security bug for Android phones, particularly those which runs on Qualcomm chips is affecting 90 Crores Android phones worldwide.

Security firm Check Point discovered the most recent threat and named it as Quadrooter. It is not a single threat; it is a collection of vulnerabilities found on Android phones.

Does your phone at risk?

If you are using an Android smartphone that runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon or other variant mobile processor then your phone definitely at risk. Most of the Android phones we use have Qualcomm chipsets. So a significant amount of phones worldwide has the issue.

What is the reason behind this?

Similar to Desktops and Laptops, every mobile device must have device drivers to communicate with the different components in the phones we use. Qualcomm chipset provides networking, camera, phone, graphics and memory hardware in the phones we regularly use. The same company develops device drivers to make comfortable for the Android operating system to communicate with the hardware. Check Point found four critical bugs in device drivers Qualcomm developed which allow malicious applications to obtain root access to our Android-based phones.

What are risks

Once a dangerous app got the root access, it can listen to our voice calls, spy on your phone camera, or misuse the financial details stored on your phone. The attacker can do anything on your phone. To protect from the risks these apps cause to our phones, it is a good idea to disable “install from unknown sources” from the Settings menu.

Phone users think that installing apps from official app stores like Google Play is sufficient to safeguard their devices from the viruses. But the latest malware went beyond that belief.

There are a large number of Android apps which pretending as the official versions of the popular apps on Google Play Store. They carry the same Android developer certificate of the original app. Thus they survived even with Google security checks.

People think they are downloading official app, but most of the times they end with fake apps which already modified with malicious code.

the Godless Malware works based on “Android rooting tools” framework which achieve root access to the majority of the Android devices without leaving any clue to the end user.

Once the root access gained “Godless” malware listen for the instructions from the Command and Control server operated by the hackers. It will begin to deploy unwanted programs into our Android smartphones.

Antivirus Scan caused Heart Machine to crash

Healthcare sector uses the technology in the form of various equipment while treating the patients, maintaining case sheets and preparing medical bills.

Merge, one of such healthcare devices manufactured by IBM crashed suddenly because of anti-virus scan when it has been used in a critical condition.

Doctors use Merge Hemo unit to monitor the patients in heart catheterization. Suddenly, in the middle of the operation, the device lost its communication with the main PC with which it runs Merge’s software.

Doctors immediately noticed the incident and rebooted the host computer. Luckily the five mins downtime didn’t lead to any dangerous consequences.

Last year the health care sector faced a high amount of ransomware attacks which demanded huge amounts to decrypt the crucial data. In this context, malware scanning became mandatory in the healthcare industry. But the system administrators have to schedule the scan routines according to the critical operation timings. Otherwise, similar incidents may happen.
