Microsoft Limits OneDrive Storage to 5GB

April 23, 2016 by computerera

OneDrive is first cloud storage that we might have used in the recent past. Microsoft limits OneDrive storage from 15GB to 5GB and notifies the same through an email to the users. This changes will be reflected on July 27th, 2016.

Microsoft had announced this decision back in December of last year but again notifies users as a reminder today.

We overcommitted with our free storage limits and we want to focus on delivering high-value productivity and collaboration experiences that benefit the majority of our users. If we continued with the current offerings, we wouldn’t be able to sustain our growth and deliver the reliable service that you count on. – Microsoft

This limitation will also apply for Office 365 users. Users who are using Office 365 will not get the unlimited plan. Microsoft confirms the discontinuing of the unlimited plans for personal, office and university subscribers.

Will we lost our files on OneDrive?

Sadly, yes, if we don’t act now. According to the Microsoft policies, users will be notified 90 days prior the stopping of the 15GB support. All users who have data over 5GB will be offered 1 year free subscription of Office 365 which comes with 1TB storage. If we don’t claim this offer and ignore it, we will have to remove some of the files in OneDrive or else buy a storage plan.

As a result of this decision, Microsoft introduces the 50GB plan other than 100GB and 200GB plans for basic users. We will be given 9 months of time to secure the files on the storage onto some other storage. If we don’t respond in that time, our accounts will be locked and held on for another 6 months. If we don’t respond to them in these 6 months also, then our files will be removed automatically.

So, it is better to act now and download your important files and make sure you have files less than 5GB in the storage. It is Microsoft limits OneDrive storage to 5GB today, will Google make any hard decisions too tomorrow? Unpredictable!
